State Sen. Kevin Daley (R-Lum) recently threw his support behind legislation that is intended to resolve Michigan’s $2.2 billion budget deficit, which Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has now signed.
The legislation addresses the $2.2 billion shortfall through spending cuts, hiring freezes and by making use of $350 million from the state's rainy day fund, according to MiSenateGOP.
While cutting an estimated $936 million in spending, the legislation also directed the use of COVID-19 federal dollars to assist schools, post-secondary education and local government. The breakdown comes to $555 million for schools, $200 million for universities and community colleges, and $350 million for local government.

“By working together, we have resolved a $2.2 billion deficit while directing federal funds to education and vital services that were hit hardest by the cost of COVID-19,” Daley said, according to MiSenateGOP.
