A bipartisan budget approved by the Michigan House of Representatives will offer Lapeer County residents more bang for their buck with an increase in funding to provide key services without raising taxes.

Rep. Gary Howell (R-Deerfield Township) voted in support of the budget, which passed with an overwhelming 101-4 majority, according to a the Michigan House Republicans website. Under the new budget, there will be an increase in education funding, with $15.5 billion dedicated for grades K-12. That includes a one-time increase of an estimated $65 in spending per pupil. In addition, there will be a $1,500 stipend dedicated to teachers in their first three years to promote the profession.

“Families in Lapeer County, and throughout Michigan, deserve to know that their children will continue to receive the education they deserve,” Howell told Michigan House Republicans. “That is why I am proud to support this plan that prioritizes our local school districts. A few months ago, there was some serious concern that major cuts would be necessary in our state’s education budget, but we worked hard to ensure that funding would be maintained at the same level as last year. We have made sure to prioritize what is most important to Michiganders, our children.”
