Haley Newland, Bad Axe High School Class of 2022 Salutatorian, dreams of writing and publishing a book. “I have loved books ever since I was younger, and so many books have really impacted my life. It would be a dream to have my own book out in the world.” says Newland, daughter of Greg and Melissa Newland. To the underclassmen, she stresses, ”Don’t let anyone tell you you cannot do it.”
As a scholar, Newland has garnered Outstanding Student Awards in English, math, social studies, science, and the arts. A Citizen of the Month recipient, Newland is a four-year All-A honor roll member who believes strongly in community service, a belief demonstrated in her membership of Rotary Interact, Student Council, National Honors Society, and the Huron County Youth Advisory Committee. As MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award Finalist, she also believes in the value of physical activity and has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams for all years of high school.
Newland credits her dad with helping her develop confidence and determination. “My dad has been a huge influence on my life. He has coached me in softball since I was younger and has always pushed me to do my best. He is my number one fan, and I have learned so much from him. I'm glad I've had such a great dad to look up to and push me to be a better version of myself.” This push and Newland’s hard work have earned her All-District and All-Conference honors in volleyball, basketball, and softball as well as the position of captain of the Huron County Thunder Softball travel team in 2021. Some of her favorite memories – winning basketball districts in 2020, softball districts in 2021, and hitting and pitching records in softball – have been earned on those playing fields.
Newland says she believes in her personal motto of “Forget the last play and move on to the next. It started out as something I applied to sports, but as time went on, I realized how applicable it is to life in general. It helps me not get lost in past mistakes and keep moving forward.” Newland will be carrying that can-do attitude to the University of Michigan to study English – and begin writing that best seller.
