Mayor Pro Tem Michael Bembas presented the Algonac Robotics Club with an Algonac Asset Award. This club started in 2015. Teams consist of students grades 2-12. There are 11 members on the middle school team and 20 members on the high school team. The club encourages students to become STEM leaders of tomorrow by building skills and confidence, encouraging teamwork, and teaching public speaking skills.
The students are also committed to community outreach, working with MI Kids on the Move to modify power wheel cars for mobility challenged children, sandbagging for elderly residents during a flood emergency, and preparing and sewing almost 500 cloth masks for members of the community during the pandemic.
The middle school “Algonac RoboRats” recently attended the Troy Hammerhead MAYhem event and came home with a 1st place trophy and the Innovate Award for creative design, ingenuity and thinking outside the box. They were also a finalist for the Control Award.
The high school "Full Metal Muskrats” competed at the Macomb District event where they finished 18th out of 41 teams. They also placed 13th out of 36 teams at the Rochester Event. The program is available to anyone who wants to join; there is no cost to join and participate. However, with no funding from the school district, they rely solely on grants, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts to cover the costs necessary to run this very worthwhile program.
