State Rep. Phil Green | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Phil Green is leading the conversation on critical issues of child welfare and substance abuse prevention in the budget hearing for the upcoming fiscal year. As the Republican Vice Chair on the House Appropriations Department of Health and Human Services Subcommittee, Green is taking charge of discussions that impact the state and families across communities.
During the budget hearing, Green addressed the recent announcement of the easing of federal oversight on Michigan's child welfare system. He highlighted the reforms that he and the Legislature have undertaken in recent years, emphasizing their success in delivering accountability, effectiveness, and compliance while ensuring the safety of children. Green expressed his satisfaction with the improvements made, stating, "This is a system that is closer to working as intended."
In addition to child welfare, Green also emphasized the need to address substance abuse issues, particularly among younger generations. He stressed the importance of allocating resources to addiction and treatment, including $8.3 million for substance use disorder support and $5 million for smoking prevention. Green emphasized the need for these commitments to reflect the growing trends in substance abuse, stating, "I'd like to see more emphasis on educating our future generations about the dangers of addiction as it relates to these products."
Green believes that by prioritizing education and support, the state can promote a healthier and safer society. He emphasized the importance of helping individuals overcome addiction and making Michigan a more attractive place to live and raise a family.
The proposed budget for the Department of Health and Human Services is almost $38 billion, and Green believes that this significant allocation should be used to maintain strong standards for the health and well-being of communities across the state.
The final budget bills must be presented to the governor by July 1st.
