State Rep. Jay DeBoyer, representing Clay Township, has recently sponsored a resolution that pays tribute to Michigan's rich history and celebrates its champions. House Resolution 224, approved by the Michigan House, designates April 18 as Champions Day in Michigan. This date holds significant historical importance, originating in 1935 during a period marked by exceptional sporting achievements in the state.
DeBoyer's resolution acknowledges the remarkable victories of that era, such as Joe Louis's prominence in professional boxing, the Detroit Tigers' inaugural World Series win, the Detroit Lions' first NFL championship, and the Detroit Red Wings' initial NHL Championship. In 1936, Governor Frank Fitzgerald officially recognized April 18 as Champions Day to honor these accomplishments, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt dubbing Detroit the "City of Champions."
Reflecting on the impact of these achievements, Rep. DeBoyer emphasized, "These historic achievements occurring in such rapid succession not only brought immeasurable joy to people in our state, but unified communities and instilled a sense of resilience and hope during challenging times." He further noted the significance of recognizing present-day champions, stating, "With the newfound success of the Detroit Lions and the success of the University of Michigan’s football team, I think it’s time to recognize the champions who have come through our state and many people throughout our state are very proud of."
The resolution serves as a tribute to Michigan's sporting legacy and the spirit of perseverance and unity exemplified by its champions throughout history.
