State Representative Matthew Bierlein has raised concerns over discrepancies in Michigan's voter registration records. According to a recent report, the state has 8.4 million registered voters, which exceeds the number of eligible voters by 500,000.
Bierlein stated, "Cleaning up our voter rolls is not a partisan issue. It’s a process issue," pointing out that counties with significant imbalances are often Republican-leaning. He stressed the importance of maintaining public trust in the electoral process, saying, "At the end of the day, voters in all corners of our state want to have faith that they are engaging in a fair process and that there are safeguards to protect it."
The report anticipates that approximately 600,000 inactive voters will be removed from the rolls by 2027. This comes after Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed felony charges against four individuals accused of voting twice in the August 2024 primary.
Bierlein has consistently advocated for increased transparency and security in elections. He opposed Democratic initiatives this legislative term, arguing they created unequal voting access and weakened signature verification and absentee ballot postmark requirements.
"Many people I talk with are very clear that they want an elections process that is secure and trustworthy," Bierlein remarked. "We all want full confidence in our elections, but it does make people concerned that basic procedures are being ignored. I will continue to shine a light on these issues so that our state can develop a better way forward that respects voters and our elections."
