A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Sanilac County Election Division in Michigan on October 30, 2024. The request, submitted by us at Thumb Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought records pertaining to pre-election testing of voting machines.
Specifically, we requested access to reports in PDF format detailing the results of these tests. The fields we asked for included the date of the test, the manufacturer of the machine, the model number of the machine, and whether each machine passed or failed its respective test.
As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
The request is part of our ongoing commitment to provide comprehensive coverage of local government affairs and promote transparency in electoral processes. We await a response from the Sanilac County Election Division regarding this request.
