State Representative Matthew Bierlein has voiced his opposition to a legislative proposal that aims to extend unemployment benefits in Michigan. The proposal, Senate Bill 40, seeks to increase the duration and amount of unemployment benefits available to claimants.
Bierlein, representing Vassar, expressed concerns about the potential consequences of the bill. "These benefits are critical for helping people get back on their feet and giving them a vital lifeline between jobs, but this legislation goes way too far to create an incentive for people to stay on unemployment instead of finding a new position," he stated. He argued that the current system already provides adequate support and warned against possible negative impacts on taxpayers and small business owners who contribute to the unemployment benefits system.
The proposed legislation would extend the maximum number of benefit weeks from 20 to 26 and increase the maximum weekly benefit amount from $362 to $614 by 2027. Bierlein cautioned that these changes could strain the Unemployment Insurance Agency's Trust Fund, potentially leading to insolvency and federal borrowing similar to past occurrences. He also raised concerns about increased fraud risks associated with expanded benefits.
"I speak with many business owners across our region who are looking for people to fill jobs," Bierlein noted. He emphasized the importance of encouraging self-sustainability and returning individuals to work rather than fostering reliance on government assistance. "Unemployment wasn’t intended to be a career path," he added.
Senate Bill 40 is now set for review by the governor.
