State Representative Joseph Pavlov has supported new legislation aimed at increasing penalties for individuals who flee or elude police during traffic stops or pursuits. The bills, House Bills 4690 and 4691, seek to address recent incidents in Michigan where police chases have resulted in serious consequences.

Pavlov, a Republican from Smiths Creek, both co-sponsored and voted for the proposed measures. He stated, “When someone runs from the police, they’re putting lives at risk, and not just the officers’ lives or their own. They also endanger innocent people on the road. This legislation sends a clear message: reckless disregard for public safety will not be tolerated. I want to give people every reason to stop and avoid putting innocent families at risk.”

He emphasized that protecting the public is his top priority: “Protecting the public must come first.”

The legislation follows increased state investments in public safety and local policing as part of the latest budget process. The bills are now under consideration by the state Senate.
