A growing number of Michigan state lawmakers are concerned that the rash of veto cuts to the state budget by Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer could have negative implications on public safety, education and health facilities.

Whitmer made 147 line-item veto cuts to the 2020 budget first passed by the Republican-led legislature, saying they were necessary for public health and safety. But community and state leaders believe her actions also pose a threat to more rural programs, as well as education and health concerns across the state.

State Sen. Dan Lauwers (R-Brockway Township) told the Port Huron Times Herald, that the governor’s decision to use the State Administrative Board to shift some $600 million in funds within state departments could penalize other areas.

“There are areas that we funded that were in the budget that the governor has eliminated,” Lauwers said. “I hope the governor’s office hears those affected by the budget cuts loud and clear. That those are good and necessary functions, and that she will approach the legislature to consider reinstating some of those items.”
