State Rep. Phil Green, (R-Millington) praised the formation of a new committee to oversee Michigan’s COVID-19 decisions.
The Michigan Legislature created the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic to help ensure accountability and oversight of state government’s response to the pandemic. It will include 10 members from both the House and Senate.
“The people of Huron and Tuscola counties have grave concerns about how the state is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Green said in a statement published on the Michigan House Republicans website. “This new committee is designed to investigate the state government’s actions during the state of emergency and give the Legislature some oversight in the process.”
“I am glad this new committee has subpoena powers, because it will help the Legislature get answers to the people’s questions more quickly and thoroughly. It’s a step in the right direction," he added.
The current pandemic is not the first time the Michigan Legislature formed a special committee to address a public health emergency. One was created during the Flint water crisis as well.
