Rep. Phil Green (R-Millington)  was recently appointed to chair the agriculture subcommittee of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

“It is an incredible honor to be working with agricultural leaders across the nation to help mold our policies for agriculture on a national level, but as well, reaching into each state,” he said, according to Michigan House Republicans. “I am looking forward to serving in that capacity and taking the knowledge of many people in my district, picking their brains, and then taking it on a national level and giving us a voice.”

He is looking forward to shaping policies that will help keep food safe.

“There is very little that we eat that does not come through a farm in some way, shape or form,” Green told Michigan House Republicans. “And we have to make sure that the policies that we are creating are safe policies, but as well, that they are promoting a solid food chain for our country. “

The agriculture subcommittee is part of ALEC’s Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force. The goal of the task force is to “promote the mutually beneficial link between a robust economy and a healthy environment,” according to the organization itself.

The counties Green represents are steeped in agriculture, which makes the appointment very important to him.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Huron and Tuscola counties -- and it has been for generations,” Green said in a news release on the Michigan House Republicans website. “This appointment is a perfect fit, and I am confident it will help us develop ideas to help keep farming strong for generations to come.”

The task force develops model policies on technology, regulatory reform, air and water quality, rural development and other areas. ALEC is designed to help legislators exchange ideas on public policy. The organization is “dedicated to limited government and free markets,” Green said in the news release.
