The Lapeer Community Schools Board of Education announced a new member during a recent meeting.

Last month, board member Brad Haggadone announced that he would not be able to complete the remainder of his term as school board member and would be finished at the end of the calendar year.

Due to his vacancy, the board had to fill his seat for the rest of his term, which runs through December 2024, within 30 days of departure. Four different candidates were interviewed, with each candidate asked the same set of questions in front of the audience. The board then deliberated and nominated Jaime Hofert, a former science teacher, to serve as their new board member.

Board members spoke highly of her, saying that she had a wealth of experience and a natural interest and investment in the community and its success.

“In summary of that question [of what the role of a board member is], we got things like, a board member would need to be informed, nonpartial, collaborative, playing an active role, ask those questions, get involved, find out information if they don’t know it. And they're really responsible for the health and advancement of the district in some capacity,” said Hofert. “They do need to build consensus and cultivate an environment of trust. Trust is absolutely essential: trust within the board, trust within the district, trust with the superintendent, trust the administration, and also community. Most of you were elected to your seats. This is a little different situation here, but that trust has been placed in you and you have that responsibility.”

In her speech and interview, Hofert emphasized the importance of school safety. She wants to establish better relationships between the district and law enforcement, as well as increase community awareness of the school.

Hofert also spoke about the importance of smart budgeting as the district moves forward into uncertain economic times.
