State Representative Matthew Bierlein has announced an essay contest aimed at engaging fourth-grade students within Michigan's 97th House District in understanding state government and their potential future roles in community development. The district includes parts of Bay, Genesee, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties, encompassing communities such as Freeland, Auburn, Caro, Frankenmuth, Vassar, Montrose, Birch Run, and Millington.

The contest invites students to write essays addressing the question: “If you were a state representative, what would you do to leave a positive impact for the State of Michigan?” Submissions should be no longer than 250 words or one page double-spaced.

“This is a fun way for our next generation of Michiganders and future leaders to communicate what they’d do if they were involved in government,” said Bierlein. He emphasized the importance of young people engaging in public service and sharing their ideas. As a legislator and father of three young children, Bierlein noted his awareness of decisions made in Lansing that affect education and workforce opportunities.

Essays are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26. Multiple winners will receive prizes including a personal state tribute and a pizza party for their class. Winning essays will also be featured in an upcoming press release distributed to local news outlets.

For questions about the contest or submission details, interested parties can contact via email at [email protected] or phone at (517) 373-8962.
