City of Owosso issued the following announcement on Feb 19.

Ice jam update from the Sheriff’s office:

“Shiawassee River Ice Jam – City of Owosso

On 2-17-22, The Shiawassee County – Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management was made aware of an Ice Jam that has formed on the Shiawassee River near M52 in the City of Owosso. The Ice Jam is located on a bend in the river adjacent to Curwood Castle.  Minor Flooding has been observed in the area.  An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV or Drone) was used to take photos of the Ice Jam.  Further photos were taken this morning that show the Ice Jam has increased in size. Additional minor flooding has occurred as a result. Emergency Management has been in contact with the City of Owosso and the State, who are closely monitoring the situation.  Mitigation possibilities to break up the Ice Jam are not feasible due to safety concerns and making the situation worse. Utilizing explosive devices are not a possibility due to safety issues and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality rules allowing this. The Ice Jam will break apart naturally.”
