Sen. Kevin Daley of Michigan led a moment of silence in the state Senate to honor state police Trooper Joel Popp, who tragically lost his life while on duty. Trooper Popp was involved in a routine traffic stop on I-75 near Birch Run Road when he sustained fatal injuries.

In a heartfelt tribute, Sen. Daley said, "Last night, in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop, this dedicated trooper paid the ultimate price as he worked to keep our community safe... Let us reflect on the selflessness, courage, and commitment this trooper displayed in protecting us all. May our thoughts and prayers surround their family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time."

Trooper Joel Popp, 39, had served at the Tri-City Post in Freeland since January 2020. His dedication and commitment to public safety will be remembered by his colleagues and the community he served. He leaves behind his wife Stefanie and their young daughter.

The loss of Trooper Popp serves as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers make every day to protect their communities. It is a somber moment for the Michigan State Police and all those who wear the badge.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Trooper Popp's family, friends, and fellow officers during this devastating time. The support and solidarity of the community will undoubtedly be a source of strength as they navigate through the grief and loss.

As we honor Trooper Popp's memory, let us also recognize and appreciate the dedication and bravery of all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to ensure our safety. Their service and sacrifice should never be taken for granted.

May Trooper Joel Popp rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire and remind us of the importance of protecting and serving our communities.
