A legislative proposal aimed at safeguarding volunteer and paid on-call emergency responders from workplace discrimination has been introduced by State Representative Jaime Greene, a Republican from Richmond. The proposed House Bill 4433 seeks to establish the Emergency Responder Employment Protection Act. This legislation would prevent employers from penalizing employees who respond to emergencies while commuting to work.
Greene emphasized the significance of this bill by stating, "Our emergency responders are some of the most incredibly selfless individuals in our community. In no world should they have to worry about losing their job or being punished at work simply for putting their own safety on the line to bravely serve those in danger." She further added that the legislation aims to ensure that unsupportive work environments do not deter such acts of heroism.
The bill includes provisions to protect first responders from retaliation and outlines measures to prevent workplace safety issues due to absences. It also allows for civil recourse if violations occur. Greene credited New Haven Firefighter Kevyn Swandon with contributing significantly to the development of this policy proposal.
"Kevyn has advocated for this much-needed legislation for years," Greene remarked, highlighting his support for protections for first responders. She noted that rural areas like those covered by the New Haven Fire Department rely heavily on volunteer emergency teams, who need assurance that they can perform their duties without fear of employment repercussions.
House Bill 4433 is currently under consideration by the House Committee on Economic Competitiveness.
