A resolution aimed at promoting safety for motorcyclists has been approved by the Michigan House. State Representative Greg Alexander introduced House Resolution 101, which designates May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This initiative seeks to honor the motorcycle community's commitment to safety and serves as a reminder for all drivers in Michigan to remain vigilant on the roads.
The resolution encourages motorcycle operators to wear protective gear, adhere to traffic rules, and conduct regular maintenance checks. It also reminds car and truck drivers to be aware of motorcyclists sharing the roadways. "Michiganders love their motorcycles, and spring is synonymous with the return of people out enjoying all that our state has to offer," said Alexander from Carsonville. He emphasized that highway safety is a shared responsibility between those on two wheels and those on four.
Alexander noted that riding a motorcycle requires specialized skills and training due to the need for quick decision-making in changing traffic conditions. "Riding a motorcycle is not the same as driving a car or truck," he stated, stressing the importance of defensive driving and proper riding gear like helmets, gloves, and jackets.
Michigan currently has over 230,000 registered motorcycles and more than 610,000 individuals with operator licenses endorsed for motorcycles. Representative Alexander is serving his second term in the 98th House District, covering parts of Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola counties, along with all of Huron County.
