On Wednesday, the Michigan House of Representatives approved a legislative plan aimed at enhancing security and mental health measures in Michigan schools. This package of bills follows recommendations from the bipartisan School Safety Task Force, which was established after the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School.

State Representative Jaime Greene (R-Richmond) commented on the passage of the plan: "Michigan’s mothers and fathers should have the comfort of knowing their children are protected and properly cared for while at school every day. The bipartisan school safety plan that we passed through the House today will help achieve that by dedicating more resources and professionals to mental health, implementing new safety protocols, and improving responses to school safety crises."

Greene emphasized the importance of ensuring students' safety, reflecting on past tragedies: "In no world should our children ever have to fear for their lives because they attended school. The tragedy that only a few years ago struck Oxford, a community just outside my district, is a reminder that we can and should do better to ensure students’ safety. Many of the people I represent were impacted by this terrible incident, and the horror from that day still lives in our memories. As their elected representative, I made a commitment to delivering real results to make our school safer and kids’ mental health a higher priority. Getting our school safety plan passed through the House marks an important step toward accomplishing that."

The legislative package includes House Bills 4222-4229.
