The Michigan House of Representatives has approved a new piece of legislation focused on school safety, introduced by State Representative Joseph Pavlov. The bill, known as House Bill 4315, mandates that the Michigan State Police create and distribute safety and security training materials to school resource officers, security personnel, and all other staff in both public and private schools.
Rep. Pavlov emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Keeping our kids safe while in school ought to be one of the highest priorities of our state’s lawmakers,” he stated. He added that no parent should have to worry about their child's safety at school and that well-trained staff are essential for responding appropriately to emergencies.
This legislation is part of a broader effort to enhance school safety across Michigan. The package includes updates to safety plans, improvements in school security measures, and increased mental health services for students. These proposals were developed following recommendations from the Michigan House's School Safety Task Force, which was established after the tragic 2021 shooting at Oxford High School.
The proposed measures will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation.
